A Tiling Database
Aims
This database has three aims:
- Provide a comprehensive collection of high quality
images of geometric tiling patterns;
- Provide a means of locating images by means of
their geometric properties;
- Provide an authoritative source for such patterns.
Browsing
Two methods are provided for browsing this collection:
-
- A slideshow which illustrates examples of the main types of patterns,
showing how others may be found.
Searching
To locate specific tilings you need to use a
search facility. Three forms of search are provided:
- A simple search which uses a selection of shapes for the
individual tiles. The shapes are regular polygons and star polygons.
The search requires that a simple form
is filled in.
- A comprehensive search facility which ideally needs some
understanding of the mathematics of tiling patterns to use. The search
requires that a simple form is filled
in.
- A tree search in which questions are asked to reduce the
number of tilings. Eventually, the number of tilings is reduced so that
all the tilings can be displayed from which a final choice can be made.
Start the search from here.
The result of a search is a list of thumb-nail images. Click on any one of
these to obtain a high-quality (PDF) image.
Further information
Basic information is available here,
or a fuller manual with some technical detail.
Please read either of these if you wish to comment or contribute to this
facility. An index to other information can also be consulted.
There are now some special collections, see.
